Open shot blasting is a process of surface preparation using abrasive material. Material is blasted at the surface at high pressure removing dirt, grime, old coatings and creating a profiled surface to allow for bonding.

Shot blasting is necessary;
o If a new coating is to be applied and there is an existing coating already on the surface.
o Surface is too smooth and needs a profile to create a better bond.
o Cleaning.
o Removal of rust and create a profile on steel before painting.
o Create grip on a surface.

To create an optimal bonding surface for a new floor screed on top of an existing concrete floor, the area should be scabbled. Concrete scabbling is a mechanical method of roughening concrete to allow for optimal adhesion of the new screed.
